Yet another wonderful "Beer Monday"

Tonight was a good night at the Porterhouse. The Prodigal Son IPA made its triumphal return to the prestigious twenty-one, only this time enhanced on the ol' manual cask tap. I know I've said it before, but thats just a really nice beer. Then I moved on to "the bastard", more commonly known as the Arrogant Bastard from Stone Brewing. Some of you know that I consider this my second favorite beer behind Boundary Bay IPA, giving me something to love in a darker color but still not compromising on overall flavor. Finally, I decided to change it up a bit and finish her off with the Pike XXXXX stout. Now some of you might be saying "But Jas, you've always said that IPA's should finish the night, not start it." To this I say, your right....but also we have to remember that beer enjoyment is an art....AND being an art form means that drinking beer is subjective to whatever your palate deems necessary for that moment in time. Now what my palate is trying to say is that the 5 X stout from Pike can hold a candle. But, (I don't want to hear it english majors) that wasn't even the greatest moment of the evening. The incredibly wonderful facilitator of Beer Mondays, the lovely miss Tara, created a concoction not previously known to mankind....or at least to Lopezbeer. What she did was wrap some fresh ground coffee beans in a filter and "let 'em soak for a while in a pint". The lucky recipient of the grounds was the 5 X. What came out of that union was the most beautiful stout I had ever laid my taste buds on. When we think of great stouts we think of intense malting of chocolate and coffee along with an appropriately high level of hopping. What came off the top of that schooner was an incredibly robust stout with a coffee flavor that percolated your senses. It was the perfect early morning and late evening drink. It is the reason why coffee flavors are said to be a positive for heavily dark malted ales. It was a marriage made in heaven that Jesus definitely would have smiled upon.

Until next time,
Lopez Jason
