Flyer's ESB

A few weeks ago i had my first taste of Flyer's ESB (Flyer's Brewing is in Oak Harbor, Washington). Previously I'd enjoyed both their IPA (which felt like getting my teeth kicked in -- maybe not the best balance of hops, but sheer quantity makes up for it) and their Skywalker Stout, so I consider myself a fan.

Anyway, the ESB (that's Extra Special Bitter for the uninitiated - don't be fooled by any of the yahoos trying to tell you it's Early Spring Beer or some crap like that) was surprisingly light and easy on the tastebuds. After the strength of the IPA and Stout I expected something strong, but instead found a pleasant session ale.

That said, it's now one of my favorite beers. Some of my Lopez brothers were less impressed; the hop balance is far from perfect and it's actually a little too hoppy to be a traditional ESB. However, the enjoyment of this ale is not in its perfect representation of ESB but in the drinkability and overall flavor.

I know this is a little vague, but it's the first posting and I'm sitting here in the unbearable western Washington heat (I think it hit 80 degrees today) wishing I had a cold Flyer's in my hand. I recommend it to all who are looking for a refreshing beer today.
